The Ministry of Health of this northern state of the country said in a statement that the “The Public Health Laboratory found the variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus known as Brazil P.1 in (…) a Minnesota native with a history of a recent trip to Brazil“.
The patient, a resident of the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan area known as the Twin Cities, tested positive for COVID-19 in early January and was prescribed isolation, he added.
Later laboratory data showed that it was the Brazilian variant. This case, along with the detection of three others infected with the British variant in Minnesota in recent weeks, highlights “the importance of minimizing travel during a pandemic”epidemiologist Ruth Lynfield said in the statement.

US President Joe Biden on Monday reinstated a ban on most foreigners who have been to the UK, Brazil, Ireland and much of Europe.
It also extended the ban to travelers who have recently been to South Africa, given warnings that variants of the coronavirus more contagious are already present in the United States.
Last week, Biden tightened up measures for the use of masks and ordered those entering the country to be quarantined as part of his strategy to combat the pandemic, which has wreaked havoc on U.S, with more than 25 million infections and more than 400,000 deaths.
