Yesterday, clashes flared up in neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince, Cap Haitien and other cities, between groups demanding the resignation of Haiti’s president, Jovenel Moise, and others supporting his standing for another year.
The Dominican consul in Juana Méndez (Haiti), José Valenzuela, confirmed that the situation in the neighboring country remained tense and that as a consulate they have started to take preventive measures, although he made it clear that there is nothing to regret in that city, the fact that there have been protest movements in some sectors.
However, he said that as consular representation in Juana Méndez, they are taking all relevant measures given the situation in the sister state.
“Juana Méndez hasn’t left there yet, and I hope it stays that way and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. That Haitians find a negotiated and harmonious solution to the situation that has arisen that affects the majority, ”he said. “We are speaking with the Dominican brothers living or transiting to Haiti so that they can take protective measures and be aware of any potential event,” he emphasized.
He clarified that the consulate is not open to the public, but that there is a staff in the legation to attend some services.
