Cleveland Browns releases DT Sheldon Richardson, saves $ 11 million over salary cap

BEREA, Ohio – A day after signing Jadeveon Clowney, the Cleveland Browns terminated Sheldon Richardson’s starting defensive tackle.

Friday’s move will save $ 11 million in space, but leaves the Browns with a huge hole in the middle of their defensive line. Richardson’s contract had no money left.

He signed with the Browns on a three-year contract before the 2019 season, starting with 31 games and getting 7.5 sacks in two seasons.

In the offseason, the Browns signed Malik Jackson to compete for a starting job on defense. They also have defensive end Andrew Billings joining the team after giving up last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cleveland signed Clowney on Thursday for a one-year deal worth up to $ 10 million.

Richardson was a pick in the first round of the New York Jets in 2013. The other starting defensive crew last year, Larry Ogunjobi, signed with Cincinnati this season.
