Cincinnati Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos has been suspended for two games for his actions Saturday, which led to a bank elimination fight with the St. Paul Cardinals. Louis.
Castellanos, who is calling for a suspension, was not the only player to be penalized, and he and five other people were also fined.
The drama actually began on Thursday, the opening day, when the right-hander from the Reds hit a run and jumped out of the box before throwing his bat. After a day off for teams on Friday, Castellanos was hit by a pitch from Cardinal reliever Jake Woodford in the fourth half of Saturday’s game.
Immortal cut, Castellanos recovered the ball and offered to throw it back to Woodford before throwing it out of play. When Castellanos came to score on a wild pitch later in the half, he slipped and hit Woodford, who was covering the home plate, then got up, screamed and leaned in front of the pitcher.
As Castellanos started to move away, catcher Yadier Molina rushed up and knocked him back, and the benches and bullpens emptied. Only Castellanos was fired, while the head of the refereeing team, Jim Reynolds, said that Castellanos “re-hired the pitcher unnecessarily” after entering the house.
“I’m not here to disrespect anyone or anything, but I want to win,” Castellanos said after Saturday’s 9-6 victory.
The manager of St. Louis, Mike Shildt, saw it differently.
“You don’t have to sit over someone and play someone,” Shildt said.
