Chrome OS 90 deployment: live captioning, diagnostic application, and more

After the desktop update last week, Chrome OS 90 starts launching today. There are a handful of usage improvements in this release, which will be available in the coming days.

Chrome OS 90 introduces a Diagnostic application which can be accessed by searching for the launcher. After identifying the device model, the Battery section notes the capacity, health, number of cycles and current, with the possibility to “Run the discharge test”.

The CPU card starts by noting the exact processor and shows a graph broken down by user and system activity. There is also current usage as a percentage, temperature and current, with a CPU test available as well. The memory is the last with its own test. At any time, users can “Save Session Log” to share with support.

After launch on the desktop, Live subtitles will be available soon in the Chrome operating system. Go to Device Settings (application) and scroll down to “Accessibility” under “Advanced.” There are subtitles at the bottom of the “Manage accessibility features” page. Live subtitling can be enabled here with downloaded voice files to make local processing possible. It will then be available in the Media control panel. This capability will be fully available in the coming weeks.

The launcher can now display inline results for the weather, word definition, stock prices and simple calculations. This means that you don’t have to perform a full Google search that opens in a new tab.

A Scan the application allows users to digitize documents and photos directly from the printer via Wi-Fi or USB. You can choose the device, file type and resolution.

Google allows Works With Chromebook certification docks (and other accessories) to be updated through the Chrome operating system.

Implicitly, Google Maps and YouTube now open as standalone application windows rather than tabs. If you right-click the app icon on the shelf, you can quickly change the behavior.

From the Drive folder in the Files, it is now possible to enable offline access for documents, spreadsheets and slides.

Google has dropped AMR-NB, AMR-WB and GSM audio codecs due to reduced use. Access can be temporarily restored with: chrome: // flags / # deprecate-low-usage-codecs
