Google has launched a new “Copy Highlight Link” feature in Chrome that allows users to sign in to a certain segment of highlighted text for easy sharing with others.
One of the few new productivity-focused features in Chrome 90, the new tool lets you identify the information you want to share and then connect directly to it. When you click, the link will take you directly to the highlighted section, rather than throwing you to the top of the page and letting you search for relevant information.
The Copy Link to Highlight feature first appeared in late 2020 in Chrome Canary, where new features are routinely tested before reaching mainstream.
A wider release of the feature has been confirmed by Google Chrome’s engineering director Adrienne Porter Felt, who wrote on Twitter to confirm that it is happening.

Google has been working with this feature for some time: a recent Chrome extension, “Link to Text Fragment,” offered the same functionality in Chromium and Chrome, but now becomes a native feature of the Chrome browser and comes with Chrome 90, which was released recently in its stable version.
If you need to share a designated piece of text with someone, you can follow the steps below.
How to use Copy the link for highlighting
- Highlight the specific block or text quote you want to share.
- Right-click on the text.
- There should be an option for Copy the highlight link to copy the item to the clipboard.
- The copied link will now open the appropriate part of the text when someone clicks on it in Chrome or Chromium.
And this is: simple but very effective to convey the finer details of that long blog or long article. Following are a number of updates to the Chrome platform, including the Chrome desktop sharing hub and a number of autofill enhancements.
Google is gradually pushing the feature to Chrome 90 desktop and Android users next week, so don’t worry if it hasn’t appeared for you yet. The feature will be coming to iOS soon.
