The Chinese government is confident that the United States can restore “peace, stability and security” after the assault on Congress, an incident it compared to an eruption of the Hong Kong Parliament during the 2019 mass protests.
“We believe that the American people want security and peace, especially in the midst of the pandemic,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Thursday in Beijing’s first reaction to what happened in Washington on Tuesday.
Thus, the Chinese authorities hope that normalcy can return “as soon as possible” to the North American country. The embassy has already called on Chinese citizens in the United States on Tuesday to take extreme precautions in the face of escalating tensions.
