Chicago shooting: Crime spree has 7 victims shot, 5 killed, between Chicago and Evanston ending with police-implicated shooting

CHICAGO (WLS) – Seven people have been shot and at least five of those killed in a shooting that stretched from Chicago to Evanston on Saturday.

A University of Chicago student is among the victims who died in the shooting, Chicago police said. Another victim was a woman who was shot after being held hostage at an IHOP in Evanston, according to Evanston police.

Chicago police identified the suspect as Jason Nightengale. Nightengale is also dead after a shooting involving police, officials said.

The crime scene tape winds around the Hyde Park neighborhood of the city, marking one of the spots in what is considered a random shooting.

At around 2:40 p.m., a person entered the vestibule of an apartment building in the 4900 block of South East End Avenue and asked to use a telephone before opening fire, Chicago police said.

“He walked into the building and I think she told him to leave the building and then he shot her. So then she started running and he shot her again,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. .

One woman was punched in the face and the other in the chest, police said.

The woman who was beaten in the chest was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The other woman was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

Neighbors say the murdered woman was the old porter of the complex.

‘She was a good person. She has two children that I know, ”said the neighbor.

A U of C student was also shot dead a few blocks away in a parking garage of the Regent Park apartment complex at the 5000 block of S. East End Avenue, police and school officials said.

The university received word just after 5:00 p.m. that a student had been found with a gunshot wound in a car, officials said in a statement to the university’s community.

The university issued a statement saying, “This is very painful news for the university community and our South Side neighborhood. The university will provide support to members of our community affected by this incident.”

The man then led police on an eastbound chase on Howard, where they exchanged gunfire at a Dollar General parking lot and Nightengale was fatally injured, officials said.

“There was a gunfire. I’m not sure who shot first, but it was in response to violence he committed in our town,” Cook said.

The hostage woman was seriously injured, police said.

A 15-year-old girl is also in a critical condition after being shot in the head while sitting in the backseat of a car where her mother was driving in the Chicago area. The police are investigating whether this shooting is also connected.

Evanston investigators are teaming up with the Chicago Police Department to bring together the Nightengale crime wave that began on Chicago’s south side.
