CD Projekt’s sales for 2020 exceed the previous year’s record

Preliminary financial data from developer Cyberpunk 2077 shows sales and profits in 2020 several times higher than the records set in the launch year of The Witcher 3

CD Projekt today announced two preliminary issues of its upcoming annual earnings report, to give you an idea of how big Cyberpunk 2077’s debut really was in 2020 and December.

For the full year, CD Projekt brought in a record PLN 2.14 billion ($ 562 million) in consolidated sales revenue. This number is more than four times higher than that reported for 2019 and more than two and a half times the company’s previous record of PLN 798 million ($ 210 million), set in 2015 with the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The company also set a bottom line record, reporting a net profit of PLN 1.15 billion ($ 303 million). This tripled the company’s previous profit record of PLN 342 million ($ 89.8 million), set in 2015.

The gap between the company’s best years seems even bigger given that Witcher 3 was released in May 2015 and took months to continue selling, while Cyberpunk 2077 hit the shelves on December 10 (Cyberpunk 2077 also obtained 8 million pre-orders in previous years until release.)

Apart from sales, it would be difficult to call the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 an unqualified success. The game debuted in such a tough state, especially on consoles, that the developer promised refunds to any customer who wanted one, and Sony completely removed the digital copy of the game from the PlayStation Store. At the moment, Sony is no longer selling it.

CD Projekt expects to announce its final results for last year on April 22.
