CD Projekt RED records sales records in 2020

CD Projekt RED are mail its almost final estimated earnings for today’s financial year 2020, revealing record sales with revenues of PLN 2139 million (USD 563 million) and net profit of PLN 1154 million (USD 303 million). The final audited results will be distributed on Thursday, April 22, but are unlikely to be different.

By comparison, last year CD Projekt RED had managed only PLN 521 million in sales revenue (USD 137.17 million) and PLN 175 million in net profit (USD 46.07 million). It is also much more than the results obtained with the launch of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt in 2015, when the studio recorded revenues of PLN 798 million ($ 205 million) and net profit of PLN 342 million ($ 88 million).

Of course, 2020 had the advantage of launching Cyberpunk 2077; even though the game was only released in early December, its sales had already exceeded 13 million units before last Christmas.

Despite the problems on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles and a substantial amount of launch bugs, it seems that Cyberpunk 2077 was still a great success for CD Projekt RED. Industrial analyst firm SuperData said earlier this year that the game turned out to be the largest digital game launch in history and that even the rebates did not significantly affect aggregate sales.

Polish game developer continues to improve Cyberpunk 2077 in order to continue to sell the game and its future expansions for many years. Update 1.21 landed earlier this week on all platforms, offering a bunch of fixes for crashes and bugs.

In addition, CD Projekt RED is working on free DLCs and upgrading the next-generation console for Cyberpunk 2077, in addition to the online elements (although these may be different from those originally planned). Witcher III: Wild Hunt will also receive the next generation of treatment in the second half of 2021, with ray tracing, much faster loading times and other visual and technical improvements.
