Cat caught trying to sneak drugs into Panama prison

He was far from purr-fect murder.

The fluffy white cat of a drug addict was caught trying to smuggle narcotics into a Panamanian prison, authorities said.

The feline was carrying the contraband in a bag tied around his neck when he was stopped on Friday in the Nueva Esperanza prison in the province of Colon, AFP reported.

“The animal had a rag tied around its neck” that contained wrapped packages of white powder, leaves and “plant matter,” said Andres Gutierrez, head of the Panama Penitentiary System.

The substances were probably cocaine and marijuana, according to another official.

Local prosecutors said they had opened an investigation into the use of animals to smuggle illegal substances into the Nueva Esperanza facility, which houses more than 1,700 prisoners.

In the meantime, the criminal cat in question will be taken to a pet adoption center, prosecutors said.

It is not the first time that creatures have been used as drug prisoners by prisoners in the Central American country.

Authorities have previously intercepted drug delivery attempts by sheltering pigeons and even drones.
