Caris LeVert expresses “gratitude” in Indiana Pacers debut after cancer removal surgery

In his first game since undergoing surgery in January to remove a kidney cancer, Caris LeVert made his Indiana Pacers debut with 13 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes to help his team recover. defeated the Phoenix Suns 122-111 on Saturday.

LeVert admitted that he felt “heavy legs” as he struggled to regain his wind and conditioning, but said he was pleased with the results.

“A month and a half ago, two months ago, I didn’t even know if I knew I would be right here, especially soon, just with everything that happened, so it’s definitely a level of gratitude and just happy to be on the ground, “LeVert said.

Emotionally, the Pacers tried to make LeVert feel comfortable.

He stopped playing in an NBA competition on January 12 as a member of the Brooklyn Nets before moving to Indiana. The small mass on the left kidney was discovered during a physical and medical test of the team before the transaction was completed.

In LeVert’s debut in Phoenix, the Pacers managed a two-game losing streak in a six-game losing streak. Twice All-Star Domantas Sabonis recorded a triple-double with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Pacers coach Nate Bjorkgren said he feels LeVert’s presence is a boost for the team. After the game, when the goalkeeper entered the locker room, his teammates celebrated his return with strong palms and support.

“Absolutely, he has energized our team, and his level of character is so high,” Bjorkgren said. “He’s such a good person. He’s been a great teammate all this time he’s been out, so our boys were very happy to have him back on the field.”

Bjorkgren expects “much more” from LeVert, who continues to adapt.

LeVert said this was the second time he had participated in actions 5 to 5 since his health test.

“We have a strong group. We have wonderful guys on the team and they were in my ear all day today, even before the game,” LeVert said. “I can’t thank those guys enough and it will be a special remnant of the season, for sure, once everyone starts clicking and stuff like that. We played a great game as a team.”
