Capitol Police Officer Who Died Shortly After Pro-Trump Riot Will Lie In His Honor

Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died in early January of injuries sustained when he responded to the siege of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, will honor House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif. ) And Senate leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) announced Friday night.

Why it matters: According to the Capitol architect, lying in honor is a final tribute reserved only for private citizens who have done distinguished service to the nation.

What they say: “The United States Congress is united in grief, gratitude and solemn appreciation for Officer Brian Sicknick’s service,” Pelosi and Schumer wrote in a statement.

  • “The heroism of Officer Sicknick and the Capitol Police during the violent uprising against our Capitol helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy, and ensure that Congress was not distracted from our duty to the Constitution.”
  • “May this ceremony and the knowledge with which so many mourn and pray for them be a comfort to Agent Sicknick’s family during this sad time.”
