While Ethan Winters may be the new face of resident Evil serial, I still haven’t seen his real face. And it doesn’t look like it will change when Resident Evil Village launches on May 7.
2017 Resident Evil 7 Biohazard marked a dramatic change for Capcom’s horror survival franchise. Instead of controlling the main character from a third-person perspective, players jumped straight into Ethan’s skin through first-person play. Resident Evil Village it seems to be where its predecessor has remained in several ways: Capcom is still hiding Ethan’s face from us.
It makes sense, at some point, that we wouldn’t see much of Ethan in the game trailers. We should do this be Ethan, after all. This is the whole point of the first-person perspective. That being said, I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Capcom kept him even hidden in the promotional assets. It’s almost as if Ethan himself is trying to keep his face secret.
Take this piece of art from last year, for example. Why does Ethan keep his gun like that? Does it smell?

And this one, which is part of a new batch launched after Capcom’s showcase at begining of the week. You’ll have to see the tall vampire lady, who will fight her with a knife, Ethan.
This third and final image was not released in the press in the United States, but we have seen it proliferate in Japanese outlets, such as 4Gamer. It’s easier to understand than the others – Ethan’s face would naturally be hidden while using a shotgun – but in context, it’s just another example of the lengths Capcom will ensure we never throw a good look at our protagonist.
I vaguely remember the fans who came up with theories when Resident Evil 7 it was still new that Ethan’s face had never been shown because he would become an important character I already knew. Some people even thought it might be a Chris Redfield clone or something ridiculous. These days, I’m happy to assume it’s an ongoing gag among developers. No stupid plot lines are needed.
