Canton girl accused of stabbing grandmother to death with kitchen knife, facing murder

CANTON – A 14-year-old Canton girl accused of stabbing and murdering her 65-year-old grandmother is charged with murder.

The murder took place at around 7:15 am in Block 4150 of Kimberly Drive in Canton on February 21, although the victim’s body was found by police on February 22.

Police say the grandmother, Cynthia Mosby from Canton, had custody of the teen.

The Wayne County prosecutor announced a charge against the teenager on Saturday. She is charged with first degree murder and second-degree murder.

According to the public prosecutor, the teenager is not charged as an adult. However, she has been designated as an adult.

“This means that, upon conviction, an adult designation gives the judge the option of sentencing the defendant as a minor or adult, or forming a mixed juvenile with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not being rehabilitated, ”the prosecutor’s office said Saturday in a statement announcing the indictment.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy added, “Ms. Mosby’s fatal stabbing is very sad and disturbing. Mrs. Mosby was a nurse who raised her granddaughter. Our prayers go out to her son and family. In this case, the 14-year-old girl is designated as an adult because, when convicted, it gives the judge the most flexibility during conviction to provide options for rehabilitation for this very troubled youth. “

Police say Mosby’s body was found by her son, the suspect’s father. When he found Mosby in the house in Canton, his daughter was not there.

Officers were directed to a bedroom in the house where the victim’s body lay on the floor with several stab wounds.

The prosecution stated that the teenager allegedly planned the crime, although no additional details were provided.

On February 21, the teenager is said to have murdered her grandmother by stabbing her several times with a kitchen knife.

After the murder, she checked into a motel in Southgate. On Feb. 22, Canton investigators found the teenager at the hotel and arrested her.

We offer our deepest condolences to Cynthia Mosby’s family. Our police officers and detectives have worked tirelessly to determine the tragic circumstances of her death. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s analysis and charges were invaluable in the wake of this challenging series of facts, ”said Chad Baugh, canton police chief.

The teen is represented by local criminal defense attorney Jeffrey Schwartz and is currently being held at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility.

She has been referred for competence and criminal responsibility assessments. The next court date is on April 15.
