California is calling for discontinuation of certain batches of Moderna vaccine after allergic reactions have been reported

California health officials recommend temporarily stopping distribution of a particular batch of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for reasons of concern about allergic reactions.

More than 330,000 doses in the batch were distributed to 287 California health care providers earlier this month.

A special community vaccination clinic reported up to 10 allergic reactions to the vaccine in a 24-hour period, considered an unusually high number. State officials say the expected response rate to similar vaccines is normally about 1 in 100,000.

The name and location of the clinic were not published, but the facility switched to a different batch of Moderna vaccines after closing for several hours. No other groups of allergic reactions have been reported.

State officials are investigating what happened at the clinic and in the meantime, the state epidemiologist, Dr. Erica S. Pan, recommends that the doses in the Moderna 41L20A group not be distributed at the moment.

“Out of extreme caution and also acknowledging the extremely limited supply of vaccines, we recommend that suppliers use other available vaccine inventories and discontinue the administration of vaccines from Moderna Lot 041L20A until the investigation by CDC, FDA, Moderna and the state is complete, “Pan said Sunday.” We’ll provide an update as we learn more. ”
