California expects nearly 90% drop in Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines next week

BERKELEY, California (KGO) – When we need more vaccines, California is about to see a major drop in doses from Johnson & Johnson – not just a few hundred or even a few thousand doses, we’re talking about a drop of almost 90%.

We will also see an 85% decrease in Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses nationwide. Instead of the nearly 5 million doses the government sent this week, next week the government will send only 785,500.

Johnson & Johnson said last week that one of their lots did not meet their standards. The New York Times reported that workers mixed ingredients, destroying 15 million doses.

If you are trying to get appointments next week when eligibility opens and you have problems, this could explain why. Demand will increase as supply decreases.

The governor said getting the vaccine to all eligible Californians could take up to a month.
