A four-year-old mother from Great Britain was put in an induced coma and her hands had to be amputated after suffering a sepsis from a bite from the family’s pooch, according to reports.
Michelle Ellis, of Plymouth, suffered a small wound when her rifle bit her while putting her in a cage, the Plymouth Herald reported.
After her flu-like symptoms worsened, Ellis was admitted to Derriford Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s response to infection damages the tissues.
She was then placed in an induced coma and placed on dialysis, according to the press.
“Her kidneys are not working yet, and the extent of the damage is uncertain at this time,” Ellis’ sister Melanie told The Sun.
“She still doesn’t know the situation with her hands. They are waiting to see if she is strong enough to absorb this, “she said, adding that her sister had suffered multiple organ damage.
Melanie said it will cost £ 32,000 – about $ 44,000 – for each hand that will be replaced with a prosthesis that will need to be renewed every five years.
Ellis’ 24-year-old daughter, Keana, said the dog’s bite was “the size of a cigarette burn, so she didn’t think about it and left – and that’s when it happened.”
The woman’s Facebook page shows her with two dogs, including a pug named Mabel, but it was not clear which of them bit her. The dog that bit her was to be let down after the tragic incident.
The family organizes a fundraiser to help raise money for Ellis’ treatment.
“The fundraiser is to help pay for her rehabilitation and any costs that come with it, but also just so she can have a little treatment when she starts to get better,” Keana told the Plymouth Herald.
“We hope it will be a beautiful delight for her and will mean that she will not have any more worries. Hopefully he won’t have to worry about money for a while, “she added.
Meanwhile, the family was unable to visit Ellis, who has been out of a coma in recent days due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are not allowed to go and visit her at this time, which makes it very difficult. The hardest part is that we didn’t expect that at all, “said Keana.
“Now I’m thinking of raising as much money as possible with fundraising and raising awareness so that they have a good quality of life when it gets better.”
