Three major jurors in the investigation into the police raid that killed 26-year-old Breonna Taylor are now calling for the impeachment of Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) in Kentucky over allegations that he mishandled the case.
The jurors filed a petition with the state House of Representatives, arguing that Cameron has violated public confidence and also misrepresented the grand jury’s key findings, the Louisville Courier Journal, who first reported the complaint.
A press release from the attorney representing the major jurors, who remained anonymous to protect their identities, said of the jurors: is truly testament to the Kentucky Constitution that they can be here today and denounce injustice and demand public accountability. “
Attorney Kevin Glogower added, “I feel honored and humbled to serve them.”
“The Grand Jurors have not chosen this fight,” said Glogower. ‘This fight has chosen them. These are randomly selected civilians who were forced to sit on a grand jury and horribly abused by the most powerful law enforcement officer in Kentucky. ”
According to Louisville, Ky., WFPL Public Radio StationFriday’s petition stated, “Attorney General Cameron has defrauded the American people and the citizens of this Commonwealth regarding the handling of and involvement in the Breonna Taylor investigation and the resulting legal action.”
The petition also alleges that Cameron illicitly used public funds by joining a lawsuit against Pennsylvania election results in 2020, as well as supporting unlawful actions as a member of the executive committee of the National Association of Attorneys General, which helped in funding robocalls telling people to join the Jan 6 pro-Trump march on the Capitol.
Cameron’s office did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the impeachment request.
The grand jury had investigated the execution by Louisville Police Department of a search warrant in Taylor’s apartment in March 2020, firing several shots, some of which hit and killed Taylor.
Cameron announced in September that the grand jury had filed just three allegations of willful threat against one of the officers, while none of the officers faced charges specifically related to Taylor’s death.
However, since the grand jury’s ruling, multiple jurors have brought forward in the case who said their findings were misrepresented.
In a press conference, Cameron had alleged that six possible murder charges had been filed with the grand jury in their investigation. But several major jurors have claimed they were not given the opportunity to discuss additional costs beyond the counts of willful threat.
Attorney Ben Crump, who represents Taylor’s family and previously called the grand jury’s September decision “scandalous and insulting,” said in a statement shared with The Hill Friday that the grand jurors’ impeachment request was “an extraordinarily courageous and admirable action. ”
“They should be applauded for taking a bold stand for justice and transparency within our institutions, along with regaining their votes that AG Cameron tried to suppress during the grand jury process,” Crump said, along with co. advisers Sam Aguiar and Lonita Baker.
The attorneys claim that Cameron “placed an impossible burden on these citizens when he skewed the circumstances of Bre’s death and failed to present the possibility of assassination attempts.”
“At the very least, we hope this sends the message that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands and manipulate our processes for their own devious purposes,” she added.
The petition to impeach Cameron comes amid similar actions against other government officials in Kentucky in recent weeks.
Four citizens have appealed to the the House of Representatives to impeach Democratic Government Andy Beshear for executive actions taken to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, with another against State Representative Robert Goforth (R) for an incident where he allegedly attempted to strangle a woman , The Associated Press. The case over the alleged sexual assault is pending and Goforth pleaded not guilty.
