The deputy for La Romana, Pedro Botello, promised on Wednesday that he will resign if the disciplinary council of the National Congress verifies that he committed any aggression during the demonstration for the release of 30% of the pension funds on Thursday.
“If the president of the disciplinary commission, if the president of the Chamber of Deputies shows me that I threw a stone, that I attacked a police officer, that I attacked this building, I swear, by the memory of my mother, who resigned in 24 hours from the position of deputy “, said the legislator.
These statements were made by Botello, a member of the Christian Party for Social Reform (PRSC), after a statement was received from the Senate in the lower house indicating that he was the main culprit of the violent acts of the above-mentioned protests.
In that document, he described that the group’s actions were instigated by Botello, resulting in attacks on law enforcement and damage to Congress caused by stones thrown by protesters.
Likewise, the senators gave the deputies the power to decide on the possible sanctions to be applied. For this reason, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, stated that the information will be sent to the disciplinary council for this purpose.
Possible sanctions
Pursuant to Rule 170 of the Rules of Procedure, the Council may present penalties in the form of private reprimand, public censorship, deprivation of representation of the Chamber in national and international events for the time set by the Disciplinary Board, suspension of the work commissions to which it belongs and deprivation of enjoying travel expenses.
Likewise, by Article 83 of the Constitution, deputies can accuse before Senate officials elected by popular vote for committing “serious misconduct” in the exercise of their functions.
The accusation can only be made with the favorable vote of two thirds of the registrations.
