Bobi Wine: Ugandan court orders release from house arrest

“The court held that freedom for personal liberty is too important not to be restricted occasionally or indefinitely,” George Musisi told CNN by telephone.

Judge Michael Elubu, who heads the civil division of the court, said that if the government had evidence against Wine, he should be charged in court and not be “unjustifiably detained at his home,” according to Musisi.

Wine, a popular singer, was the main opposition leader in the January 14 presidential election, and his home has been surrounded by the military and police since the election.

Uganda’s longtime president, Yoweri Museveni, has been declared the winner of the election for a record sixth term by the country’s electoral commission.

Wine rejects the election results, saying he has evidence of fraud and intimidation.

He also posted on Twitter last week that no one was allowed to visit his home, where he was stranded with his wife, Barbara and her 18-month-old niece, without food.

His wife’s niece was later “safely evacuated,” Wine told CNN after lawyers were allowed to briefly remove her.

Soldiers remain at the complex and Uganda’s military has a “history of defying orders,” Musisi said. He added that they will address the court for every soldier who remains in contempt.

A spokesman for the Ugandan Police Forces said officers still at Wine’s home would vacate the headquarters.

“We are an institution that respects the law and we respect the decision of the High Court,” he told CNN on Monday.

The Wine team will decide within the next 24 hours whether to contest the election results. The Wine team had hoped to decide earlier, but could not meet due to house arrest, Musisi added.

The deadline to do so is February 2.

Museveni’s senior press secretary, Don Wanyama, said on Saturday that Wine has no evidence that voting tricks took place.

“Uganda has lawsuits. Evidence of the tricks is brought before the courts, not CNN,” he added.
