Bill Belichick gathers surprising praise for Adam Gase, Sam Darnold

Jets fans could count the seconds until Adam Gase is no longer head coach, but Bill Belichick doesn’t think there’s anyone better for the job at Florham Park.

Before Sunday’s game with the Jets, the longtime Patriots coach asked questions about the team he worked for just before coming to New England, as well as defender Sam Darnold. Belichick made it clear how much he thought about Darnold, who apparently returned in the second and third seasons of the NFL and did not think the QB could be in better hands.

“I don’t think you could train anyone better than where they are,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Gase, who is 9-22 over two seasons with the Jets in Sunday’s game, admitted earlier this month that he believes Darnold’s fights were on him and his coaching staff. It is believed that the end of the regular season on Sunday will be Gase’s last game with the Jets.

In 11 games this season, Darnold has recorded just eight touchdown passes with nine interceptions. He missed four games this season due to an altered joint in his right shoulder.

“I don’t think there’s any lack of talent or ability to play,” Belichick said of Darnold. “… He is an athletic guy who has big size, big arm, hard to approach in his pocket, good perspective and is well trained.”
