Biden, Georgia and the Beijing Olympics

When President Biden publicly lobbied Major League Baseball last week to move his All-Star game from Georgia, he no doubt thought he was on the side of the Angels. But now what will he do about the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics?

Mr Biden objects to Georgia’s new law as “atrocity”, although it offers more ways to vote than New York and Delaware, among other states. The president is so offended that he called on a sports league to boycott an American state, doing economic damage to the Atlanta area and, in essence, understanding the state legislature as fanatical.

We can’t wait to see what the US president will say about China’s voting rules. There are no lines at polling stations in the Middle Kingdom, as there are no polling stations, there is no controversy over absentee voting, as there are no ballots. The country is led by a leading cadre of the Chinese Communist Party, and its decisions are ratified by the National People’s Congress, which meets once a year.

Perhaps Mr. Biden can compare Georgia’s voting rules with those in re-education camps in Xinjiang Province. His own secretary of state says China is committing genocide against Uighurs.

He could send Rob Manfred as an emissary to investigate, as the MLB commissioner is trying to expand his league’s business in China, even if he boycotts an American state. Surely Chinese President Xi Jinping would let Mr. Manfred inspect the camps and why not bring his colleague Georgia, the boycott enthusiast LeBron James, to certify that the Uighurs are happy in their work?
