Rep. Peter DeFazio (D., Ore.), The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said he didn’t think paying the full cost of the plan through tax increases was necessary. Mr. DeFazio said he would support an increase in gas and diesel taxes to pay for the new investments over time, as well as more loans to cover some of the costs.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D., NJ) said he wanted the Biden administration to consider alternatives to the corporate tax increases to try to get Republican backing. “ I’m thinking about the business piece, if it’s a non-starter for the Republicans and it means we can’t get duality, I’m curious about their other ideas, ” he said, citing user costs as one possibility.
Mr. Gottheimer and other New York area lawmakers have also urged Congress to restore the deduction for state and local taxes, which was capped at $ 10,000 in the 2017 tax law. [House speaker Nancy Pelosi] said she was sympathetic to that idea, while the White House said lawmakers should propose a way to pay for the deduction.
