SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Precinct Commissioner 3 Trish DeBerry and three members of the San Antonio City Council, representing northern areas, call on the metropolitan health district and Bexar County Hospital District to co-manage a COVID-19 vaccination site in the northern part of the county.
Next week, Texas will receive 200,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, which recently received emergency authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration.
DeBerry says transportation offers the city and county the opportunity to create a new vaccination site.
“Johnson & Johnson FDA approval and transportation creates a unique opportunity for the city and county to work together by expanding vaccine distribution sites,” DeBerry said in a written statement.
District 8, 9 and 10 council members Manny Pelaez, John Courage and Clayton Perry have joined Deberry to request a new vaccination site in northern Bexar County.

Pelaez said the site will facilitate access to vaccines.
“Comfort is the key to success,” Pelaez said. “By placing another location where the constituents consist and function, we are more likely to slow down the spread of the virus.”
County officials said more than 200,000 people received a vaccine through the city’s Alamodome website and the county’s Wonderland Mall website.
Courage said that current vaccination sites do not meet their vaccination goals for disadvantaged populations.
“Current vaccination clinics fail to achieve the proposed goal of vaccinating the most underserved populations. The data show that more northern residents are being vaccinated at these clinics. Why not make it more convenient for our voters? We are not saying to eliminate these clinics, just add more, ”Courage said in a written statement.

Local leaders propose the following locations as potential vaccination sites in northern Bexar County, as they are on important easily accessible roads:
-
Toyota Field on Wurzbach Parkway
-
VIA Park and Ride on Highway 281
-
Alzafar temple on the loop 1604
-
Fiesta Texas on Interstate 10
“If the plan is to continue mass vaccination clinics in our community, we need a COVID vaccination site north of Loop 410, now established. We were told that the problem was not the lack of available locations, but rather the lack of supply. Given more vaccines online, it is imperative that we provide closer access to vaccines for our vulnerable populations across the community, ”Perry said in a written statement.
