When Apple announced the iPhone 12 models with MagSafe charging capabilities, the first third-party agMagSafe accessories were displayed during the announcement. Shortly afterwards, Belkin officially introduced the 3-in-1 Boost Charge Pro wireless charger with MagSafe, which is the first official third-party “MagSafe” charging option.
Belkin’s Boost Charge Pro MagSafe will be available for purchase on January 8th, and before launch we tested the charger to see how it works compared to the MagSafe standalone charger and whether it’s worth the asking price of $ 150.
In terms of design, the Boost Charge Pro agMagSafe looks similar to other Belkin 3-in-1 chargers on the market. Made of a white plastic material, covered with a softer silicone, Boost Charge Pro MagSafe has a circular base with an angular, t-shaped arm, chrome, which comes from the top of it, which houses a MagSafe charger on a part and an Apple Watch. loading the puck on the other side.
The design looks simple and straightforward, but I would like the circular base to be slightly smaller or rectangular in size to fit better on a desk. It seems to me that the shape is a little strange on my little desk, because it is about 5.3 inches wide at its widest point, but given the weight of the iPhone with the angle of the charger, it probably needs a base of that size to remain upright. Both loading pockets are static and cannot be rotated or tilted in any way, and the default angle takes up more vertical space than I would like.
The MagSafe charger works with all Apple iPhone 12 models and is dimensioned so that it can be used in portrait or landscape mode. Even the largest iPhone 12 Pro Max can be used in landscape mode without interfering with the Apple Watch charging port on the other side. The magnets line up quickly and it’s easy to get an “iPhone” in the right place for charging, even in the dark.
The same soft material that covers Apple’s standard MagSafe charger covers the Belkin agMagSafe charger, while the Apple Watch charging puck is a smoother plastic like Apple’s charging options for the Apple Watch. You can get Boost Charge Pro MagSafe in white or black and there is a stickier silicone material at the bottom of the accessory to make sure it stays on a desk when you hold up an iPhone, plus it has a weighted base.
You’ll notice that in many of my photos, the Apple Watch is at an angle and that’s because it just doesn’t want to stand on the Apple Watch charging puck. It rotates with a nudge or when attaching / detaching an iPhone 12, but keep in mind that I have a 40 mm Apple watch. With additional tests with a 44 mm Apple Watch, I did not see the same problem. It is also less pronounced with a heavier 40mm stainless steel Apple Watch, but the problem is with that model.
Boost Charge Pro agMagSafe is quite light, but with the sticky base I had no problems lifting or moving when removing my iPhone from the charger. There is a white LED light at the top of the base, which lets you know that the AirPods are aligned and charging correctly. Turns to amber if alignment is disabled or an object is in the way. I’m not a fan of loading dock lights, because they distract at night, but at least this light is limited to charging “AirPods”.
Phone fits the charger at an angle and is easy to see when you look at it on a bedside table or desk while charging if you receive a notification or want to check the time. If you want, you can also use it for FaceTime calls or for watching videos in landscape mode.
Because it is a 3-in-1 charger, the Boost Charge Pro base MagSafe is a wireless charging platform that can accommodate AirPods or AirPods Pro, so that the Apple Watch, iPhone 12 and AirPods can be charged at the same time level. The small circular indentation on the charger tells you where to place odAirPods for charging.
The Boost Charge Pro MagSafe can charge a PiPhone 12 up to 15W, which is the same charging speed as the standard MagSafe charger, while providing enough power for AirPods and Apple Watch. Apple’s OwnMagSafe Duo, which pairs a MagSafe charging puck with an Apple Watch charger, is limited to 14W, so the Belkin charger should be a little faster.
Apple’s standard AppleMagSafe charger charged ihone 12 (from total dead) to 61% in one hour with a 20W power adapter, and Boost Charge Pro charged it to 66%, so it was somehow even faster than the charger standard. I’m not sure if I don’t get 15 W charging with the Apple agMagSafe charger or what, but I was happy with the Belkin charging speed. I also did tests with three devices simultaneously and, from death, Boost Charge Pro agMagSafe managed to charge a PiPhone 12 at 61% in an hour, while also charging an Apple Watch and another iPhone.
Belkin provides a 40W power adapter and a 1.5m cable with Boost Charge Pro MagSafe, which takes all the guesswork out of the power adapter you need to get the fastest speeds. Apple does not include a power adapter with the agMagSafe or MagSafe Duo charger. For the SMagSafe charger, you must use the official Apple 20W charger or another charger that may or may not be compatible, and for the MagSafe Duo, the maximum speed requires a compatible 27W + charger.
Trying to find out which power adapters I can use with Apple’s charging options was a hassle, so I appreciate that Belkin has a ready-to-use power adapter. You cannot use a third-party power adapter with it because it does not work via USB.
The disadvantage for Boost Charge Pro MagSafe is that the MagSafe charger does not work with older iPhones. Technically, agMagSafe chargers are compatible with previous iPhones and are capable of charging at 7.5 W, but Belkin’s vertical design relies on magnets to hold the iPhone in place and because there are no MagSafe magnets In older iPhones, there is no viable charging option.
You can charge an older iPhone where AirPods is intended to work, even if this charging point was specifically designed for irAirPods, as it is only a Qi-based wireless charger. This charging point worked with an iPhone X, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max, so I guess it fits most devices. Because this charging point is intended for “AirPodsod, it is limited to 5W, but I found that it works perfectly for my devices that are not iPhone 12 and I appreciated that I have the option.
In terms of compatibility, you can use Boost Charge Pro MagSafe with MagSafe enclosures. I tested AppleMagSafe cases from Apple and it worked well. I don’t have non-MagSafe cases tested, but Belkin says it’s specifically designed to work with MagSafe certified cases.
Bottom line
If you are looking for a multi-device charger for an iPhone 12, this is the one you can get. Works with any iPhone 12 Apple Watch and AirPods model and, at $ 150, is only $ 30 more expensive than the foldable theMagSafe Duo.
MagSafe Duo is the best choice for travel, but for a charger you intend to use at home, Boost Charge Pro MagSafe is an attractive and functional multifunctional charger that works as expected. I have no real complaint about the Belkin agMagSafe charger and since it works with three devices, allows vertical operation and comes with a power adapter, I much prefer it to the “MagSafe” Duo.
