Bears DL coach Jay Rodgers was expecting to leave for the Chargers

With the Chicago Bears in the middle of a search for a new defensive coordinator to replace a retired Chuck Pagano, it looks like they will also be in the hunt for a new defensive line coach.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, defensive line coach Jay Rodgers is expected to reunite with former Bears coach Brandon Staley, who was hired as head coach at the Los Angeles Chargers. Biggs did not specify the specific role, but could be the defensive coordinator.

Rodgers oversaw several impressive defensive line units and was an integral part of the development of people such as Eddie Goldman, Bilal Nichols, Roy Robertson-Harris and Nick Williams, among others.

Earlier, it was reported that Dave Ragone, the passing game coordinator, could be headed to the Atlanta Falcons, where he is favored as offensive coordinator under new head coach Arthur Smith.

Also, according to Biggs, Bears coach Charles London could be headed for the Falcons.

The Bears are currently looking for a defensive coordinator to succeed Pagano and have already conducted several interviews. According to The Athletic, Chicago interviewed former Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher, Indianapolis Colts defensive back Jonathan Gannon and Bears legend Mike Singletary for defensive coordinator this week.

Rodgers, along with safety coach Sean Desai, was once thought to be a favorite candidate from the inside to take on the position of defensive coordinator, but that probably doesn’t seem so now.
