Banner Health officials declare morgues at capacity, with 49% of all patients treated for COVID-19

PHOENIX – In a press conference on Friday, Banner Health officials report that morgue capacity has been exceeded due to recent deaths with COVID-19, and 55% of ICU beds in their units are occupied by patients with COVID-19.

Banner’s clinical director, Dr. Marjorie Bessel, said 49% of patients are being treated for COVID-19.

“These deaths have led us to exceed our morgue capacity in some hospitals,” Bessel said.

Bessel added that Banner Health is using refrigerated trucks to expand morgue capacity at Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix.
