“Avatar” expects to resume the box office crown at all times after the relaunch of China

LOS ANGELES, March 12 (Reuters) – “Avatar”, James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster, is set to return to the box office of all time at the box office this weekend after the film was re-released in China.

“Avatar”, which debuted in 2009, held the global box office title for a decade until it was overtaken by the Marvel superhero epic “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

On Friday, Cameron’s film rose about $ 3.5 million in new ticket sales after it was relaunched in China, where filming returned after the theater closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This made “Avatar” a little shy out of the $ 2.798 billion worldwide collected by Endgame, according to distributor Walt Disney Co.

Cameron has worked on four sequels for Avatar. The next film, which has been postponed several times, is currently released in December 2022. (Reporting by Lisa Richwine Editing by Bill Berkrot)
