Australia is in no hurry to open its borders

(CNN) – Australia is in no hurry to open its international borders and risk the country’s success with the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Sunday.

As one of the best pandemic countries with fewer than 30,000 reported cases and 910 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University, Australia’s borders are still closed.

The rapid closure of borders and the restrictions that have followed sporadic regional increases in cases have so far reduced the number.

“Australia is in no hurry to open these borders, I assure you,” Morrison told a televised briefing, according to Reuters.

“I will not jeopardize the way we live in this country that is so different from the rest of the world today.”

However, there is hope that visitors will be allowed to enter by the end of 2021. On Friday, Morrison suggested that the priority would be to allow vaccinated Australians to fly to and from the country.

But he said that even a partial opening of the border was still in its infancy and would not be considered until vulnerable people were vaccinated. Releasing the restrictions could result in 1,000 cases a week, he added.

Australia’s borders are closed, returning citizens and permanent residents, their immediate family and exempt travelers are the only people allowed to enter the country.

From April 19, a complete travel bubble will begin with New Zealand, the entire country classified as a green area. However, it is not indefinite – regional outbreaks could reduce the balloon.
