Aunt Jemima’s breakfast brand renamed Pearl Milling Company

The Aunt Jemima breakfast brand will be renamed the Pearl Milling Company, it was announced on Tuesday, after the 130-year-old maple syrup mascot was examined last year on its links to slavery.

Quaker Oats, a division of PepsiCo that owns the brand, unveiled the new name and logo, which it said will hit store shelves in June.

“While the name on the box has changed, the great tasting products – the ‘pearl’ in the familiar red box – remain the same, with the mission to create happy breakfast moments for everyone,” the company said on its website .

In June last year, Quaker Oats announced Aunt Jemima’s future retirement, saying the character’s origins were “based on a racial stereotype.”

The logo was originally inspired by the 19th-century minstrel character, a black woman who contented herself with serving her white masters.

A former slave, Nancy Green, became the first pancake maker in 1890.

The move to withdraw the brand came after the company faced a fierce backlash following national protests across the Black Lives Matter over the police assassination of George Floyd and other black Americans.
