Armed with a knife, a man kills seven people in China

Beijing, China

A man armed with a knife killed seven people and injured the same number on Sunday in a city in northeast China for unknown reasons, according to state media.

The tragedy occurred early this Sunday on the streets of Kaiyuan, Liaoning Province, Xinhua news agency reported.

The attacker killed seven people in what appears to have been a “non-discriminatory attack”, after which he was detained by police in front of a bathroom, according to the same source.

An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of this drama, the Kaiyuan Public Security Bureau said in a statement posted on the social network Weibo (equivalent to China’s Twitter).

Knife attacks are quite common in China, due to the lack of other weapons to kill in a country where ordinary citizens are not allowed to carry firearms.

In general, these types of crimes are blindly committed, without personal purpose, by people who perceive themselves as victims of injustice and seek revenge on society.

In February 2019, a person who suspected his wife of being unfaithful stabbed eight people and injured seven others in a town in Gansu Province (northwest).

Also in April 2018, another individual killed nine high school students who left high school in Shaanxi Province (north), injuring 12 others. The 28-year-old said he acted out of revenge after being the victim of harassment in while studying at the same school.
