CHANCELLERY Argentina has issued a statement clearly expressing its “strong rejection” of new military exercises in the Falkland Islands. The statement denounces the participation of soldiers from Grenadier guards and from Scottish guards corroborated with forces from Royal Artillery (RA) and Royal Air Force (RAF for the English acronym of Royal Air Force), which are part of the UK’s military deployment in the Falkland Islands.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the British military presence “contradicts Resolution 41/11 from UN General Assembly (South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Area) which, among other provisions, calls on states in all other regions, especially states of military importance, to scrupulously respect the South Atlantic region as an area of ​​peace and cooperation, in particular by reducing and elimination of its military presence in that region ”.

The Argentine Government stated that these operations constitute “an unjustified show of force and a deliberate deviation from the calls of the numerous United Nations and other international organizations, urging both Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations, in order to find a peaceful and final solution to the sovereignty dispute involving both countries in Question of the Falkland Islands“.

The British position

The British forces said that “the demonstration gave participants a better understanding of a variety of weapon systems, types of ammunition and their effects on a large number of different surfaces”.

The second confrontation in six months

In July last year, Argentina made public its rejection of another military exercise in the islands. On that occasion, a joint exercise was carried out in which: the patrol ship HMS Forth, British Infantry Company A and the aircraft A400M together at typhoons from 1435 Zbor RAF.
