ATHENS – Greek archaeologists accidentally unearthed a bronze bull idol, over 2,500 years old, at the archeological site in Olympia, the culture ministry said on Friday.
An observatory archaeologist came across a mini-statue during work on the site, one of the most celebrated shrines in ancient Greece, the ministry said in a statement.
With one of its horns protruding from the ground after heavy rainfall, the statuette was found intact, near the temple of the ancient Greek god Zeus in Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games.
He was transferred to a conservation laboratory.
Archaeologists believe that it was part of thousands of gifts given to Zeus between 1,050-700 BC. Bulls and horses played an important role in the life of the ancient Greeks and were therefore often dedicated to the gods.
