Apple’s new leak reveals the shock of the iPhone 13 design

Update 04/19 below. This post was originally published on April 17

Apple is making some significant design changes with its iPhone 13 models before the previous launch in 2021, but now we know what will be a really massive new upgrade of the range.

In a new video, popular YouTuber Filip Koroy, aka EverythingApplePro, unveiled the CAD 13 designs for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro that show that Apple introduces new massive rear cameras in the range. In fact, Koroy describes them as “very strangely large” and a “massive increase in size.”

Update 04/19: a new report from Apple superstar Ming-Chi Kuo (via AppleInsider) today unveiled other upgrades for the iPhone 13. Kuo claims that state-of-the-art 5G modems within the range will bring global support for the ultra-fast 5G mmWave specification. The iPhone 12 line surprised many with the lack of support for mmWave outside the US, when many cheaper phones (such as the Google Pixel 5) did. What Kuo did not reveal was whether this extended mmWave support will reach the full range or be limited to iPhone 13 Pro models. mmWave is notoriously starving for battery life, which makes it a doubt for the iPhone 13 Mini and this, in turn, could affect the iPhone 13, as Apple likes the phones to be functionally identical. Look at this space.

While the images above and below best illustrate this change, Koroy also has specific measurements. “On the iPhone 13 Pro Max we have a 3.41 mm larger lens and [it is] now 4.81 mm wider, it looks more like a rounded square than the 12 Pro Max. ”

It’s a similar change for the dual cameras of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, Koroy also confirming the new arrangement of the diagonal camera that was leaked earlier this week. The changes mark the beginning of a new trend towards oversized smartphone cameras, following the launch earlier this month of Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra.

In addition, Koroy also notes that the other major design changes to the iPhone 13 range: “These CADs confirm a smaller notch because they have a smaller headset, which is just above.” While the new notch is only about 30% smaller than the current one seen from the iPhone X, it is very welcome and (probably) delayed.

Other nuggets from Koroy include a “confirmation” that the SIM card tray will now integrate with the logic board to save space, while the volume buttons and move switch have “migrated 2-3 mm north.” The new iPhone 13 models will also be almost identical in size to their predecessors, but the old cases will not fit due to the change in camera size.

While previous leaks have revealed that Apple’s state-of-the-art iPhones will feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, state-of-the-art 5G modems, improved WiFi speed and range, an improved version of MagSafe and significantly improved energy efficiency, there’s no doubt that their new massive rooms will be the biggest talking point.

Combined with improvements made before image stabilization and a new captivating video portrait mode, hopes will be high, the iPhone 13 range will return to the top of the camera rankings. The good news is twofold: 1. We won’t have to wait long to find out and 2. From here, Apple intends to upgrade to the “next level”.
