After several rumors, Apple finally introduced today the sixth generation Apple TV, which comes with the A12 chip and a recently redesigned Siri Remote. At the same time, the company has made some changes to the set-top box range, which no longer includes the previous generation Apple TV 4K.
With the announcement of the sixth generation Apple TV, Apple stopped selling the fifth generation Apple TV – formerly known as the first Apple TV 4K. Previously, Apple TV was equipped with the A10X chip from the second generation iPad Pro and did not have an HDMI 2.1 port, as the new generation does.
Instead of lowering the price of the previous generation, Apple did something different (and somewhat controversial). The company will continue to sell the fourth-generation Apple TV, which was introduced in 2015 with the A8 chip on the iPhone 6. This model, available only with 32 GB of internal storage, will now come with the new Siri Remote.
However, even though it is a nearly six-year-old model, the Apple TV HD still costs $ 149. The new Apple TV 4K replaces the old model at a price of 179 USD for the 32 GB model and 199 USD for the 64 GB model.
Fortunately, customers should still be able to find the original Apple TV 4K at lower prices at other stores, which seems like a better deal than buying the old Apple TV HD in 2021. Both the new Apple TV 4K and Apple HD TV with the new Siri Remote will be available in May.
