Apple Pay with Express Transit support comes on the Clipper card from San Francisco

Public transportation users in San Francisco now have a new way to pay. The Clipper card, which is used for most public transportation systems in San Francisco, now supports Apple Pay with Express Transit mode. This was first announced in February and is now available to everyone.

The Clipper card is a rechargeable smart card used to pay the transit fee in the San Francisco Bay Area. It offers access to buses, rails, ferries and trains from 24 different transit agencies, including BART and Muni.

Using the new Clipper mobile app, motorcyclists can manage their Clipper cards, add cards to Apple Pay on their iPhone and Apple Watch, and purchase subscriptions for transit agents. You can also add value directly from the Apple Wallet app.

Passengers in transit who are enrolled in the Clipper START program and those who use cash to charge their Clipper cards can also use the Clipper app, but cash payers will need to use a BART, Golden Gate Ferry or SMART ticket machine. or select Caltrain ticket machines to add value to your iPhone or Apple Watch.

The support for the Apple PayExpress transit mode is particularly remarkable. Apple Pay Express Transit allows users to quickly use their iPhone or Apple Watch to authenticate to contactless terminals without having to authenticate via Face ID or Touch or even unlock the phone. This significantly simplifies the experience for riders.

Apple Pay Vice President Jennifer Bailey promoted the new partnership in a statement:

“We are excited that customers in the Bay Area, our hometown, can now use Clipper on their iPhone and Apple Watch and benefit from a safer, faster and more convenient way to travel,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president. “Once they’ve added their Clipper card to the Apple Wallet, motorcyclists can simply touch and choose a contactless experience that keeps their information private and secure.”
