Apple is trying to limit offensive AirTag engravings … with mixed results

Apple AirTag Tracking can be custom engraved using text, numbers, and even emoji, but users who want to express some college humor will probably have to look elsewhere, as Apple’s online AirTag customization tool is easy jignit.

An AirTag is large enough to fit up to four characters or up to three emojis. This might seem like enough to become dubiously creative with your diction, but the same The Verge points out, Apple puts pretty strict limits on what you can embed on an AirTag.

For example, a Pile of Poo emoji may not come after a Face Horse emoji, but other animal-poo combinations are a fair game. Similar limitations apply to potentially offensive words explained in text, although some customers will certainly find their own ways around the system.

This isn’t the first time Apple has cut the wings of potential comedians and toilet comedians – many of the same emoji restrictions are present on AirPods and iPad engravings, for example. However, the ability to record more affordable AirTags can introduce more people to the funny guarded part of Apple.
