Apple’s latest software update will fix an issue that the company said affects some older MacBook Pro models.

Users currently running Big Sur on their machines should now see the macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 update when they go to the Software Update section of their System Preferences. The description of the update specifically states that it “addresses an issue that may prevent battery charging in some MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models,” although Apple appears to have included some security updates also.

macOS Big Sur 11.2 was released last week with a update group and troubleshooting. Among other things, the update fixed Bluetooth connectivity issues, fixed a system preferences administrator access issue, and fixed a mini-Mac issue when connecting them to external displays using an HDMI to DVI converter.

Aside from the problem of charging some correct MacBook Pro models today, but related to the more general charging of the MacBook Pro, there have recently been some interesting rumors about charging the next generation of Pro laptops that make us feel hopeful. Both Bloomberg and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the company plans to launch two 14- and 16-inch screen MacBook Pro models that would drop the USB-C charging standard in recent years for a return to MagSafe charging ports.

As much as I love the USB-C standard – many gadgets, one cable – I can’t help but feel hopeful about a potential future in which I don’t send my laptop crashing to the floor every time I’m blocking my charging cable.
