According to the report, the mobile market reached 11,432 million deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2020 and 52.6% of total smartphone sales in Japan were iPhones, contributing substantially to a 10.6% increase from year to year for the mobile market of the country as a whole.

Apple shipments totaled 6.015 million units in Japan, an increase of 13.8% year-on-year, mainly due to the company’s launch of its iPhone 12 series capable of 5G.

Sharp was second behind Apple, with 1,414 million units delivered and a market share of 12.4%, while local brand Kyocera was ranked third with a market share of 7.0%. and 801,000 units delivered.

Samsung took fourth place with a market share of 6.8%, delivering 781,000 units, followed by Sony – traditionally a favorite of the Japanese brand – which ranked fifth with 732,000 deliveries and a share of 6, 4%, other smaller brands constituting the rest of the deliveries.

Looking to 2020 as a whole, Apple sold the most smartphones in Japan with a market share of 46.5%, delivering 15.637 million units which brought it an increase of 8.3% year on year. . Meanwhile, Sharp, Fujitsu, Samsung and Kyocera took market shares of 13.3%, 8.3%, 8.1% and 7.5%, respectively, with the rest of the domestic brands lower.

Despite the delay in launching the iPhone 12 series in Japan due to the global health crisis, Apple has remained the undisputed mobile phone brand in the country, where iOS regularly accounts for over 60% of the operating system market, compared to 50% United States.
