LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers

For much of this NBA season, LeBron James has clearly been worthy of winning the MVP. He led the Los Angeles Lakers to several victories without the presence of his teammate, superstar Anthony Davis. LeBron would have been the oldest player in the history of the league to receive this award.

Unfortunately, he turned his ankle, which kept him out for weeks. This absence eliminated virtually any chance of LeBron winning the MVP. Although, most likely, the award is not being finalized, this does not prevent people from further debating the issue. Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps of ESPN recently spoke on the podcast. The Hoop Collective And the conversation between the two experts became quite heated when it came time to talk about LeBron.

The clip above was not the worst part of the discussion, as Bontemps went directly against Windhorst.

Bontemps and Windhorst are two respected NBA experts and it is rare for any of them to participate in this type of exchange. For whatever reason, the LeBron theme sometimes upsets people.

Can LeBron return to the MVP race?

Although all indications are that LeBron has no chance of winning the MVP after being injured, the door is not yet completely closed. James Harden, Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid were all considered top competitors.

Harden got out due to an injury, and Embiid just missed a ton of playing time. Jokic has not been injured, but his game has not been as solid lately. With Jamal Murray eliminated for the rest of the season, the superstar center has an excellent chance of becoming the favorite to receive the award.

The only way LeBron can return to the race is if the Lakers hit a series of losses and return soon. The team would not have been terribly bad without him, but he will certainly not make the playoffs if he loses all season. Right now, LeBron is just a few games away from losing the MVP race completely.

At this point in his career, he is more concerned with winning championships. Based on the way he defied the passage of time, LeBron could be among the contestants for the coveted award once again next year.

When will LeBron play?

The Lakers finally received some good news in a long time, when Frank Vogel revealed that Anthony Davis will return shortly after a two-month absence. Although this is certainly very good news for the team, there is still no precise date for LeBron’s return. Your return may depend on a number of factors.

If the team continues to win a decent number of games and is in the top six in the Western Conference, there is really no reason to make it play. He will not win the MVP and has nothing to prove. It would be much smarter to let him rest as long as possible before the playoffs if they don’t need him on the field. If he feels better, he will definitely return before the playoffs. You will need a retraining period. It is very feasible to see him return with 10 games left in the regular season. This would give him another two weeks to recover.
