Android users can finally preview the pages in Chrome

Until recently, the only way to open a link in Chrome’s mobile browser was to leave the current page or link the link to a separate tab. No scenario is ideal, especially if you just want to to briefly navigate a link before opening it. Fortunately, Chrome now finally allows you to preview hyperlinks in Android.

Google recently added the page preview option through a server update. It is enabled by default for all devices, so you don’t have to sink your settings or install other patches to work, but some users may not even know that it’s possible to preview links because Google has added functionality to both suddenly.

To preview a link in the Android Chrome app:

  1. Long press a hyperlink to open a pop-up menu
  2. Select “Preview page”.
  3. A smaller tab will open over the current page. You can preview and view its content as normal, without leaving the page you are already on.
  4. If you want to load a preview page in your own tab, tap the arrow icon in the upper right. press “X” icon to close a preview window.

Link previewing is a small but useful addition to Chrome that serves many purposes, allowing you to see farce or degreased an article to see if that’s what you’re looking for.

That being said, don’t preview the pages unless you know it’s a safe site. Previewing a link loads all the content of a page – including all of them images, videos, and code that the page uses. This includes any NSFW content you might avoid, but there are bigger threats than the adult sites to worry about.

Phishing and malware scams often use fake URLs to steal personal information or sneak malicious software onto your devices, and previewing these pages can be as dangerous as opening them directly. The best option is to not simply touch suspicious links. However, you can inspect a link in Chrome without opening or previewing the page: just tap and hold the link to open the pop-up menu. The URL of the link is displayed at the top of the menu. If you do not recognize the URL or if it’s obviously fake, don’t click on it.
