Android 12 DP3: Widgets get forced rounded corners

Following the recent popularity of homescreen widgets after their launch on iOS, Android 12 gives love to the long-standing operating system widget system, including a new menu, forced rounded corners and more.

With Android 12 Developer Preview 3, Google has made quite a few changes to the widget system. The most visible change, which affects existing widgets, is that the widgets on the Android home screen now have rounded corners – just like anything else in Android 12.

The effect is most pronounced on widgets that were previously square or rectangular, such as Gmail and Google Keep. In the case of Gmail, the adjustment of Android 12 to the widget is almost unnoticeable, giving it a book-like look that seems intentional. However, for Google Keep, which has no padding, the forced rounded corners create a jagged edge in the widget’s design.

Meanwhile, the experience of adding widgets to the home screen has also received a review in Android 12 Developer Preview 3, with a new menu, complete with a search bar. Below the search bar, you’ll now find a couple of custom widget recommendations. As you may have guessed, the new list of widgets also visibly has rounded corners in its user interface.

In a similar way, the more specialized list that shows only the widgets of a certain application has been renewed with Android 12 DP3. The view is now a bit more condensed and cleaner overall.
