And now this? The mystery covers the future of Daft Punk

Paris, France.

After his separation, What are the plans of the French duo Daft Punk? Solo albums, soundtracks, video games? “Everything is possible” with these musicians who “tend to appear where they are least expected”, according to the specialists consulted by AFP.

“No one ever managed to get into their minds: it’s hard to pierce the hull of the robots” they wore for almost three decades Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, says Patrice Bardot, co-author of a book about French electronic music.

“It’s very easy to identify their music, with all its references, but in terms of its personality, it’s more complicated,” agrees Yves Bigot, a specialist in this Parisian duo who composed hits such as Good luck Yes Around the world.

In any case, no one bets on a definitive exit from music. “I am still alive and will continue my career,” predicts French composer Jean-Michel Jarre, a tutelary figure in electronic music.

A solo album is the step taken by separating several groups from “French Touch” – as the phenomenon of French electronic music is known -, as was the case of members Air, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, currently engaged in various personal projects .

– Behind the camera? –

For Bardot, Daft Punk’s future “already corresponds to their past”, as since his last album, “Random Access Memories”, in 2013, “everyone was already on his side”.

Indeed, 46-year-old Bangalter composed the soundtrack for several films by Argentine director Gaspar Noé and 47-year-old Homem-Christo, worked with Charlotte Gainsbourg and produced for compatriot Sébastien Tellier.

“Between soundtracks, music for video games, cartoons … there are so many possibilities”, explains Bigot, for whom “we must not forget that he is also interested in cinema behind the camera”.

For example, the video in which they announced their separation on Monday contains scenes from “Electroma”, a film made by the Parisian duo and which premiered in 2006 at the Directors’ Week in Cannes.

But “will a Bangalter or Homem-Christo project cause the same hysteria? I’m not sure, their alliance caused this effect. Just look at the announcement of their separation: it looks like they’re dead,” says Bardot.

“Anything is possible, I even wonder if there won’t be a last album called + Epilogue +,” says Bigot, referring to the title of the video they posted on YouTube on Monday to share the end of their careers together.

– Their faces “will remain hidden” –

“They will be attracted to projects in which they will have great independence, because they do not need money,” explains Bardot. “They tend to appear where they are least expected.”

Bigot points out that with their “aura” of planetary stars, they will be able to work with whomever they choose. “Who would say no to them?” Spielberg? Coppola? ” He wonders.

Regardless of their plans, “they will not change policy,” their faces “will remain hidden“Bardot is advancing.

“Guy-Manuel is shy, he is the one who speaks the least in interviews and Thomas will not become a David Guetta,” adds Bigot.

“And nothing prevents them from joining later. There are many examples in the history of music,” he concludes.
