An Indonesian submarine with 53 on board disappears during the torpedo exercise

Jakarta – The Indonesian military said on Wednesday it had sought help from Singapore and Australia to search for a 53-crew submarine after losing contact with the ship off the coast of Bali.

“It is true that the KRI Nanggala 402 lost contact as early as 3:00 a.m.,” said First Admiral Julius Widjojono. He said the Indonesian navy is looking for the submarine.

“We know the area, but it’s quite deep,” Widjojono said.

Reuters news agency, quoting a spokesman for the Indonesian navy, said the German-made submarine had conducted a torpedo exercise north of the island of Bali on Wednesday morning, but never reported the results as it should have.

The Associated Press later reported that the ship repeated on Wednesday for a missile shooting exercise scheduled to take place on Thursday and attended by Indonesian Army Chief Hadi Tjahjanto and other commanders.

Reuter said the submarine was built in 1978, but completely overhauled in South Korea in 2012.
