After the attack, Xie developed two black eyes, a swollen wrist, and post-traumatic stress disorder that made her too scared to leave her home, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family to raise money for medical bills.
The GoFundMe raised more than $ 930,000 within a week of the attack. The original goal was $ 50,000.
Now her family says that Xie wants the money to go to the Asian-American community to fight racism. According to the online fundraiser, the problem is bigger than them.
The page also says Xie’s mental and physical health has improved. She can now open her hurt eye and is ‘in a better mood’.
Anti-Asian attacks are on the rise
After the attack, police said investigators were “working to determine whether bias was a motivating factor.”
San Francisco police have ramped up patrols in predominantly Asian neighborhoods following “an alarming spike in brutal anti-Asian violence in recent weeks” in the Bay Area, the department said.
