By the end of the weekend, at least nine more people had died from gun violence in consecutive shootings across the country – in Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska, and Louisiana. At least 10 more were injured.
A 7-year-old girl was killed on Sunday afternoon in a shooting in Chicago that also seriously injured a 29-year-old man, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Spicuzza said.
In an emailed statement to CNN, Spicuzza said the two were in a vehicle near a company’s parking lot when they were hit at approximately 4:18 PM.
The girl was beaten several times and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the statement said. The man was hit in the torso and was hospitalized in serious condition.
The shooting is under investigation. No one is stuck, the statement said.
Austin, Texas
Austin police, fire and emergency medical services responded at approximately 11:42 a.m. on the city’s Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway, where they found three people with gunshot wounds, officials said.
Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Stephen Nicholas Broderick, a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective charged with sexual assault on a child last year, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office told CNN.
The victims – two women and a man – knew Broderick, said Joseph Chacon, Austin Police Chief of Police. One child was involved in the incident but has been located and is safe.
Broderick resigned from the sheriff’s office last year after his arrest in June, and was released later that month.
He stayed on Sunday evening.
Kenosha, Wisconsin
According to Sheriff David G. Beth, gunfire broke out in the Somers House tavern on Sunday around 12:40 PM, according to Sheriff David G. Beth, who said it “sounds like one person was removed from the establishment and possibly came back shortly later “and started shooting.
It was unclear why that person was initially removed, the sheriff said.
The sheriff’s office said Sunday night that officials had found an “stakeholder” who would be charged with first-degree intentional homicide, with possible additional charges pending further investigation.
Dozens of law enforcement officers from at least seven agencies and eight fire departments worked on the case, involving several crime scenes, the sheriff’s office said.
Columbus, Ohio
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, a small group had gathered in a Dollar General’s parking lot to commemorate Jarrin Hickman, who was murdered there a year ago.
A dark-colored SUV drove past around 7:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said, and people inside began firing at the crowd. Five people were hit by gunfire and were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
But 39-year-old Latoya Carpenter was killed as she drove past the store, the sheriff’s office said. A bullet hit Carpenter in the head and her car crashed into a parked car. She was pronounced dead on the spot.
There were no suspects in custody, the press release said, and the shooting was still under investigation.
Omaha, Nebraska
