Actress America Ferrera is making the transition to a career behind the camera, lining up her feature film debut.

The 36-year-old Superstore star signed to direct the adaptation of I Net Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter for Netflix, according to Deadline.

The actress, who became a filmmaker, who previously directed episodes of Superstore and Gentefied by Netflix, also responded to news on social media.

The project is adapted from Erika L. Sanchez’s 2017 novel for young adults, following Julia Reyes, the teenage daughter of first-generation Mexican immigrants.

She often confronts her traditional parents and her sister Olga, who fits very well with the mold of a “perfect Mexican daughter.”

The family is overthrown when Olga is killed in an accident and it is up to the rebel Julia to keep the family together.

“Years ago, I fell in love with Erike L. Sánchez’s amazing novel. The depth, intelligence and frightening intelligence of her writing, and her young Latin heroine, hit me to the end and left me wanting much more, ”Ferrera said in a statement.

Lente creator Yvette Chavez wrote the screenplay adaptation, with Sanchez co-producing.

The sixth and final season of Ferrera’s hit NBC series Superstore is currently airing, and she recently starred in Gentefied, directing new episodes.

Ferrera is also one of the co-founders of the Time’s Up movement and has also worked on the Biden / Harris campaign and the Georgian Senate campaigns.
