Amazon will employ 3,000 corporate employees in Boston, the US expansion continues

Amazon.com Inc. plans to add 3,000 employees to its corporate ranks in the Boston area, one of the many technology job expansions in major US cities for the company.

The online retailer said the jobs will be shared between support teams, from Alexa’s smart speaker system to Amazon Web Services, Amazon Robotics and Amazon Pharmacy, a new business unit launched in November. Jobs will include roles in technology and software development.

Boston’s employment plans add to one of several recent expansions for Amazon, which is the nation’s second-largest employer, with a workforce in the United States totaling more than 800,000 people. The company recorded an unparalleled increase last year, adding more than 400,000 employees, bringing the global workforce to over 1.1 million. The company has added thousands of jobs to corporate offices across America, including large hubs such as New York, San Diego and Dallas.

The company’s expansion into many U.S. cities comes nearly two years after its carefully planned plans to set up part of a second headquarters in New York fell apart following the reaction of local, state and congressional officials and activists on project, which included about $ 3 billion in tax incentives.

Amazon said it rented a 17-story office building in Boston’s Seaport harbor to house the city’s growing workforce. The company said it does not receive new financial incentives for expansion.
