Álex Saab: Judge who would house arrest him, he has covid – Investigation Unit

The defense and family members of the Barranquilla Álex Saab have stated that he was placed in a hotel by prison this weekend and even that his freedom is imminent.

But neither has happened. Despite the fact that the Barlovento Court of Appeals agreed to award him jail time, the decision was not carried out last Thursday and proceedings for his extradition to the United States are still ongoing.

In the midst of that judicial pulse, defending the well-known figurehead of Maduro, now called Venezuela’s plenipotentiary ambassador, released a statement on Saturday complaining about what they call sabotage.

Despite the fact that on Thursday, January 21, the Barlavento Court of Appeals granted the demands for house arrest, the injunction has not been officially disclosed. Cynically, this will result in Ambassador Saab being held in custody until at least Monday, as today a holiday in Barlavento. All this prolongs the psychological torture of Ambassador Saab, “they emphasize.

In an effort to be recognized as a special ‘envoy’ from Venezuela, that country even sent a statement to federal court in Miami saying that defendant Saab had held the title of special envoy since 2018.

It is clear to federal agents that they have set that date because they know that the last-minute ambassador appointment, revealed by EL TIEMPO in December 2020, is not retroactive and does not grant Saab any immunity.

Approve with Covid

Saab’s defense, who is being prosecuted in the United States for money laundering in connection with the Maduro regime, points out that the presence of a Cape Verde judge was necessary for the hearing on the country’s freedom to take place.

To the surprise of those summoned to the hearing, the said judge was absent, claiming problems derived from covid-19. Aside from the fact that the epidemic has been around for over a year and has not prevented their presence, this absence tantamount to one clear and deliberate attempt by the government of Cape Verde to sabotage the hearing and
discredit the Court, ”they complain.

And they announce that the legal team has contacted the Secretary of the Barlavento Court of Appeals and the Attorney General’s Office and both have confirmed that all competent authorities have been notified on the same day.

For this reason, they say the postponement is “ shrouded in mystery as to why Sal’s police were not notified. And it is not the first time that the Special Envoy has been the victim of these irregularities in the Cape Verde judicial system, which on this occasion appears to be deliberately trying to sabotage the Cedeao Tribunal, presumably as a result of pressure from the United States. ‘

Profession and threat

Meanwhile, Cape Verde’s Supreme Court is preparing to decide whether or not Saab will be extradited, which the United States considers a key sign to reach the gold and dollars that have left Venezuela and made agreements with Iran, Turkey and Russia .

(In context: what does the US say about Saab as Maduro’s plenipotentiary ambassador?)

While that is happening, his defense announced that he had requested the direct intervention of Cedeao’s heads of state to hold Cape Verde responsible for what they call “the continued violation of the binding order of December 2, 2020
issued by Cedeao, which deliberately destroys the foundations of the Community and the Cedeao Tribunal
“.

For now, Saab will remain in the cell assigned to him, at least until next Monday, when the offices reopen.
